Leadership
Lincoln class members learn community history
Leadership
Lincoln class members traveled through the county recently to
learn when and how Lincoln County was settled and to become familiar
with the major events and influential people in the history of
Lincoln County and Fayetteville from early settlement through
present day.
During the
day-long event, Leadership participants first toured the Fayetteville/Lincoln
County Museum and learned about major events in the community
from its early pioneer days to recent activities. The group also
visited the sites of the Lincoln County Poor House and the Donalson
Hospital, learning how the community assisted those in need. They
finished out the day at the courthouse hearing about county history
from County Executive Jerry Mansfield and participating in an
historical tour of the square led by Clark Waggoner.
Class member
Eric Reynolds said he was surprised at the important role that
the community played in critical moments in our nation’s
history such as the Indian Wars and the Civil War.
“County Executive Jerry Mansfield did a great job of telling
the story behind the Camp Blount historical marker where the lives
of several key figures came together, including David Crockett,
Sam Houston, and Andrew Jackson,” he said.
Reynolds said
he also enjoyed touring the museum. “It's fascinating to
see how previous generations lived here, and learn about their
daily life and the struggles they overcame such as flooding and
tornadoes.”
Leadership
Lincoln is a personal development program designed to motivate
participants to develop leadership qualities for addressing community
needs. It consists of a day and a half retreat and eight one-day
seminars, in addition to a class project.
In December
the class will attend local government day, designed to give class
members insight on how city, county and state government operate.
